Exploring the Adkins Arboretum: A Haven of Native Plants and Wildlife on the Eastern Shore of Maryland

Situated on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, the Adkins Arboretum is a haven for nature lovers and those seeking to explore the beauty of the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain. As one of the few botanical institutions dedicated to conserving and promoting native flora, the Arboretum's collection spans across 400 acres of diverse habitats.

Visitors to the Arboretum can immerse themselves in a variety of native plant communities, including meadows, old fields, pine plantations, hardwood forests, bottomland forests, and wetlands. These cultivated gardens and natural landscapes serve as a model for preserving and restoring indigenous plant communities and habitats.

Beyond its conservation efforts, the Arboretum aims to engage a broad audience interested in the environment. By showcasing the roles native plants play in natural history, ecology, and art, they promote the appreciation and uses of these plants. From providing habitat for wildlife to contributing to ecosystem processes that clean air and water, native plants have a vital role to play.

The Arboretum's Visitor's Center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. The grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset, allowing visitors ample time to explore the pristine grounds and enjoy the natural setting.

Non-residents are encouraged to support the Arboretum's mission by contributing a suggested admission fee of $5 for adults and $2 for students aged 6-18. Children aged 5 and younger can enjoy free admission. Additionally, free passes are readily available upon request for anyone interested in visiting the Arboretum.

Events are held throughout the year. For example, don’t miss the experience of visiting the 4th Annual Plein Air Adkins the first weekend of November 2025. Plein Air Adkins is a delightful one-day event where artists capture the beauty of the Arboretum in the morning and showcase their masterpieces in an exhibit and sale in the afternoon. This event is open to all artists who want to participate. You can register online in advance or on the day of the event. Everyone is welcome to explore the Arboretum's beautiful woodlands, meadows, and wetlands while watching the artists at work. In the afternoon, enjoy live music as you browse the exhibit and have the chance to purchase art created that very day! The event is free for all visitors, but please register in advance to help with planning.
